Website Terms Primer
If you're considering building web presence for you or your business, you might run into unfamiliar terminology. Here's a quick review of several key concepts and terms related to websites:
» Website
A set of internet pages that may include text, images, links (to other pages in the website or the internet), video, audio, forms, etc.
» Domain
An internet address that identifies the location of a website. Examples: www.cnn.com, www.google.com, www.webcraft.co.il.
» Web Hosting
Having the files and systems comprising a website on a web server (see next definition).
» Web Server
A special computer which is used for web hosting. Its job is to send the files of the hosted websites to the computers of the people visiting those sites.
» Static Website
A website whose content is presented in a uniform way to all its visitors. Contrary to what one might think, static websites may also include motion such as animation, etc.
» Dynamic Website
A website whose visitors might each see different content. Examples for dynamic websites: Sites with a content management system, blogs, forums, e-commerce websites, etc.
» E-commerce Website
A website that offers one or more products or services for sale online.
» Blog
A website where a person (or several people) publishes articles, opinions, experiences, thoughts, etc.
» Forum
A website serving a community of users for discussion, exchange of opinions, questions and answers, etc.
» Content Management System (CMS)
A system that allows certain users to update website contents through a management interface which is accessible on the web using a username and a password.
» WordPress
Open-source software which is a CMS, and is used to build blogs and other websites.
» Drupal
Open-source software which is a CMS, and is used to build a wide variety of websites.
